One of the most important things that Carter Hargrave accomplished in his career was to found a new martial arts style, today known as American Combat Kempo. This style is now recognized by many international organizations and its techniques are used by the United States Marine. American Combat Kempo was born because Hargrave felt that a combat self defense art is needed in order to meet people’s requirements in what concerns real world situations. It is a style that can be practiced at any age and even by people physically limited.
Hargrave combined different styles to come up with this one that doesn’t resemble anything else in Kempo or Kenpo. Hargrave describes in a simple way the process that he followed in order to create this style. He takes a move and then removes all the unnecessary steps in order to convert it into something that can’t be anticipated or prevented and that delivers a high amount of energy. He started with modifying some moves from Standard Kempo and Okinawan Karate and combined them with Kung Fu strikes.
Then he also included the best of Ju Jitsu and, in order for his art to be complete, he incorporated traditional okinawan weapons and modern weapons. The final purpose was to make the procedures effective for real world fighting scenarios. Hargrave thinks of the American Combat Kempo to be an art that meets real needs that real people have and not an ultimate fighting art.
Carter Hargrave is the president of World Kempo Association, the largest Kempo Karate association. It teaches both inexperienced individuals and military and agencies. Hargrave came up with the best training and ranking program that offers effective results one can use when his or her safety is at risk. The video programs are especially conceived in order for the student to feel like Hargrave is right there in person. World Kempo Association also offers certification and rank recognition for school owners or for those who already hold black belts.
Carter Hargrave wrote two books on American Combat Kempo. “Japanese Kempo Karate Training Manual” is adequate to be used even by people with less or no experience at all. From white belt to black belt, the book covers all the moves from each rank test. It is also suitable for those experienced or already holding black belts because it just adds some extra knowledge to the one they already posses. “Japanese Kempo Karate Entrance to Secrets manual”, the second book on this topic, is designed for those interested in advanced training.
Hargrave’s contribution to the field of martial arts is not limited to just founding American Combat Kempo. He is also president of World Jeet Kune Do Federation. This disseminates the teachings of Bruce Lee, the founder of Jeet Kune Do. Hargrave is a second generation teacher because he learned form and Original Bruce Lee School student. Considering the great influence these teachings had on him and the fact that in the early nineties Jeet Kune Do was in total chaos, Hargrave once again attempted and succeeded in meeting people’s needs. By founding World Jeet Kune Do Federation he brought this art closer to people and promoted it adequately. Besides the books on American Combat Kempo, he also wrote “The Original Jeet Kune Do Training Manual”.
In 1995 Hargrave became Professor of martial arts and he was the youngest person ever achieving this. His teachings in karate brought him the Instructor of the Year award, in the same year. One year later, he received the award for Best Martial Arts School in the United States. In the same year, the United States Senate and the United States Congress recognized his achievements. Now Carter Hargrave teaches Kempo Karate and Jeet Kune Do at his private school in Oklahoma. This school, Hargrave Martial Arts, is conducted just like Bruce Lee conducted his and in order to get in, you have to apply and to pass some background checks.
Carter Hargrave is the happy father of two da
